This position is a member of the Juneau Pioneer Home providing person-centered support in a safe environment for up to forty-nine (49) elders.

What you will be doing:

Provide assistance with activities of daily living for the residents to maintain a high quality of life through independence; coordinate the delivery of services to residents as defined in each resident’s individual plan of care, perform supervisory duties of staff, and ensure residents’ safety. This position leads teams, develops and maintains daily work schedule for certified nursing assistants and assisted living aides. Also assists in the development and maintenance of the quarterly written assisted living plans for residents; and leads or coordinates follow-up communication with residents and their families.

The working environment you can expect:

This job is located in the Juneau Pioneer Home, an assisted living home at 4675 Glacier Hwy in Juneau, Alaska. The home is nestled near Twin Lakes with breathtaking views of nearby mountains, the Gastineau Channel, and wildlife such as brown bears, eagles, ravens, blue herons, kingfishers, porcupines, deer, and squirrels.

Who we are looking for:

Position-specific knowledge, skills and abilities that are desired or contribute to the success in this position:

  • Planning and Compliance: Skill and ability to plan, organize and implement staffing plans, program goals, policies and procedures.
  • Supervisory: Skill and ability to supervise the work of certified nurse aides and assisted living aides in the delivery of assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, medication assistance, and other care procedures as well as leisure, recreational, and therapeutic activities.
  • Personnel Actions: Skill and ability to exercise substantial authority in personnel actions; select employees, identify and schedule training, assign and monitor work, and evaluate the effectiveness of staff.
  • Resident Services: Skill and ability to serve as a member of the Home’s self-directed team; identify resident needs and integrate recommendations into the individual resident’s plan of care; coordinate the delivery of necessary services; communicate special needs or problems to the appropriate team member.
  • Interdisciplinary Teams: Skill and ability to lead interdisciplinary teams, develop, review, and periodically modify written assisted living plans for residents, describe residents’ functional capabilities, their needs and preferences for assistance with activities of daily living, and provide services to meet their needs; and to coordinate team reviews of residents’ assisted living plans and communicate with resident and their families regarding special needs or services.

Other Job information:

  • This position is in support of the Pioneer Home, which is a 24 hour facility.
  • This Pioneer Home is an Eden Alternative facility, where the environment includes contact with plants, flowers, and pets including cats, dogs, fish and birds.
  • Employees of the Pioneer Home receive continual screening for tuberculosis, COVID-19 (coronavirus) and criminal history.

Bachelor’s degree in gerontology, psychology, social work, nursing; or in recreational, physical or occupational therapy; or a closely related field.


Three years of experience working with the elderly, of which one year was at the supervisory or lead level.


The required education may be substituted by:


A current license or registration as a registered nurse, psychologist, social worker, or as a recreational, physical, or occupational therapist;


Four years of professional experience working with group living programs and/or providing a variety of services to the elderly.

(3 semester or 4 quarter hours of undergraduate study equal one month of work experience.)

A Master’s degree in gerontology, psychology, social work, nursing; or in recreational, physical, or occupational therapy; or a closely related field, will substitute for two years of the required work experience (2 semester or 3 quarter hours of graduate study equal one month of work experience).

There is no substitution for the one year of supervisory or lead experience.

Special Requirement:

Some positions may require possession of a current Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements.

Special Note:

This job class requires a background investigation including fingerprinting.

Additional Required Information

At time of interview applicant must provide:

  • Two (2) professional references (including work/supervisor-related) and three (3) character references (personal) with current contact information.
  • Copies of last two (2) most recent work performance evaluations.

If selected and prior to hire, applicant will be asked to:

  • Submit to fingerprinting and criminal background check screening.
  • Provide current evidence to be free from active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) with test results dated within the last twelve (12) months prior to start date.
  • Provide a copy of current CPR and First Aid certificate(s), if available.
  • Provide current evidence of negative results to COVID-19 (coronavirus) testing performed within two (2) weeks prior to start date. See IMPORTANT NOTE below.
  • Submit copy of current Alaska driver’s license.
